- ROUTE OF THE CARES:It is one of the best-known paths in northern Spain that runs through the Picos de Europa, between the Leonese town of Posada de Valdeón and the Asturian town of Poncebos.
The Cares route was opened in the rock as an access road for the maintenance of the feeding channel of the Camarmeña-Poncebos hydroelectric power plant around the year 1916/1921.
It runs through what is known as the divine gorge of the Cares River and it is a path excavated at a medium height of approximately 11 kilometers. Considered one of the most beautiful in Spain, it runs through caves, bridges and paths carved into the rock.
The spectacular nature and the moderate slope of the Cares route make it ideal for hiking. Of the nearly two million people who annually visit the Picos de Europa National Park, it is estimated that the Ruta del Cares is the path that receives the greatest influx of visitors.
The Cares route is, in the opinion of many, the most impressive pedestrian route available to anyone, even without previous experience in the mountains.
It usually takes four hours to complete on foot just one way, and eight if it is done there and back.
